Sinners(2025)
Written & Directed by Ryan Coogler
I'm going to first talk about the cinematography of this film by Autumn Durald Arkapaw. The way she played with aspect ratio, the long tracking shots, the way she captured 1932, the horrifying vampires, and basically everything—it's phenomenal, it's magical. Give her an Oscar already. Ludwig Goransson is on a generational run right now. Oppenheimer and then this? The music is ridiculously great; in the film there's a line about great musicians. I think that might be true about Gorranson; he assisted the story with his music and put it on another level. Another thing that I really loved about the screenplay is how charming the chemistry is between the characters; the film doesn't bore you one bit because of it and the dialogues written by Ryan Coogler. There is a really awesome subtext of the film about freedom; every character wants freedom—the identical twins, Mary, the vampires, the musicians. Hell, the music is used as an expression of freedom. I think the movie is set specifically in the 1930s for a reason; the family being Black and everything, it's all part of it. Coogler captures the time and racism in a scene that you can overlook easily; it's very subtle.
And I believe Ryan Coogler's genius is that he kept the film alive, entertaining, and badass. If I talk about performances, every single performance is perfect, and specifically Michael B. Jordan—he plays the twins, both different from one another; it's just masterful.
Lastly, if you missed this film in the theaters like I did, I feel you, but don't miss it now.
